Easy Fleece Dog Bed

With colder weather approaching, our pups may appreciate a snugglier bed. I made this one out of fleece and a bed pillow. I made it for my little Schnauzer, Lucy, but she declined to be photographed. Pictured is her (somewhat larger) cousin, Teddy, who was kind enough to be my model. They both loved it.

This bed sews up very quickly (it has an envelope back where you insert the pillow), and can be very economical. I got the fleece on sale and had a coupon, so one yard cost $3.26 (you could do even better with a remnant). You can make 2 beds out of one yard.

You'll need 60" wide fleece, matching thread, a standard size (U.S.) bed pillow (20" X 26"), and a sewing machine. The fleece I used did not have a one-way pattern. You will need more fabric if you have a one way pattern.

Most fleece doesn't really have a right side and a wrong side, but I'll mention it from time to time, just in case you're using something that does have "sides".

To do:

1. Cut two 21" x 17" rectangles, and one 21" X 27" rectangle. Set the 21 X 27 piece aside.

2.
Take the two 21 X 17 rectangles, and fold up one 21" edge 1/2" and pin. Do this to each of the two rectangles.

This is what you have now:

Top: part of the 21 X 27 rectangle
Bottom: the two 21 X 17 rectangles, with one each of the 21" edges pinned up 1/2"

3. Sew the turned up edges in place.

4. Lay the 21 X 27 rectangle out, right side up. Layer a 21 X 17 rectangle on top (to the left), wrong side up, with the hemmed edge toward the middle, matching up outer edges:

5. Layer second 21 X 17 rectangle over to your right, wrong side up, hemmed edge toward the middle, matching up outer edges:

All three layers

6. Pin around all four outer sides. Sew around all four sides with a 1/2" seam allowance. Trim off the tip of each corner:

7. Turn right side out through the envelope opening and insert pillow. You're done!

  9. Your dog bed is really cute, but it's nowhere near large enough for my dog. He's a big guy! His current bed is a large rectangular shaped foam slab with a zip off cover.

  18. Hehe - what a cute Boston! I use fleece for my guinea pig. I love working with it and the scraps are so good for dusting! I hadn't thought to make a fleece dog bed, though. I'll have to remember that for when we have a dog again. Visiting from What to Do Weekends!

  22. Such a good idea! Great that it's easy to remove the insert to wash the fleece. I bet I could even make a larger one with 2 pillows for my 60lb lab, although she would probably curl herself into a ball to fit on this one!

Thank you so much for sharing this tutorial with us at Merry Monday. I'll be featuring it at tonight's party, 8p CST. Make sure to stop by!

  26. I need to make a pillow for our fur baby too. He loves finding blankets to lay on, but then they get dog hair all over. A pillow is a must. :) Thanks for linking up at Show Me Saturday! Hope to see you there again this week.
