Fresh Cranberry Orange Sauce

This cranberry sauce has a bright, tangy-sweet flavor. The addition of fresh orange zest provides a nice contrast to heartier holiday foods.

Printable Recipe

Ingredients:

1 (12 oz.) bag fresh cranberries (washed, sorted, and drained)

3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup orange juice (fresh or commercial)
zest of 1 large orange

Directions:

In a medium sized saucepan over medium heat, dissolve the sugar in the orange juice. Stir in the cranberries and cook, stirring frequently, until cranberries start to pop (about 10 minutes). Simmer on low for 2 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in orange zest. Pour into a bowl, cover, and refrigerate. Sauce will thicken as it cools. This freezes well, so you could make a double batch and freeze some for Christmas.

  6. I am not crazy about cranberries but I admit I love making cranberry sauce like this -- it is so much fun to watch the berries burst! And it is so much better than that stuff they can and so easy to make! Thanks for the recipe.

  7. HI Joy,

Thanks for stopping by & comparing recipes today! I've never tried or tasted one that uses orange juice, but I've seen a number of versions that incorporate it so it must be popular!

No matter which version you try, though, there is one thing I agree upon - nothing compares to homemade cranberry sauce (if you've only had the canned variety - you haven't lived!) :-)

    Happy early Thanksgiving to you!

    1. Carol, I grew up with the canned stuff, too. :) For some reason, even after I knew that *some* people made their own, it seemed like it would be difficult or time-consuming. And of course, it is neither. :)

  19. How beautiful to have this on a Thanksgiving table! The zest on top contrasting with the cranberries is so eye-catching. Orange and cranberry sound lovely together...I know I sure like them together in muffins. This sure beats the pants off of that jiggly stuff in a can!

    1. Cranberry sauce may be a little bit of an acquired taste, I don't know. :) When I was growing up, my mom would make a fresh cranberry relish for Thanksgiving- raw cranberries and raw oranges all chopped up fine with a little bit of sugar. I didn't care for it then, but I love it now.

I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving, too!!
